This week: Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted; Final California-bound Gulf tanker arrives in Long Beach amid supply concerns; Miami International Airport prepares for major cargo expansion.

Current Critical Industry Trends

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted as discussions continue around a potential reopening agreement. President Trump said stronger action may be taken if a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached.

The last known California-bound tanker from the Persian Gulf has reached the Port of Long Beach as new supply disruptions loom. The arrival underscores rising concern among port officials, who are now monitoring California’s oil supply for potential shortages and price impacts.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is launching a new service connecting European hubs with Red Sea ports, adding capacity to a trade lane facing congestion and rising demand.

Ports

Georgia’s Port of Brunswick remains the busiest automotive port in the U.S., with sustained volume growth driving a fourth berth expansion and ongoing infrastructure upgrades.

International

Canada’s border messaging system is experiencing a technical glitch, leaving some mandatory messages unread. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has implemented a temporary grace period for fees tied to delays caused by the system disruption.

Trucking

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently highlighted significant changes in the trucking industry, pointing to new rule implementation, stronger enforcement, and efforts to close regulatory loopholes as key drivers of the improvements.

Rail

Railroad companies are getting opportunities from shippers interested in moving cargo by rail, motivated by the increasing fuel and trucking costs. This change comes as railroad sees a volume uptick of 3% YoY in the first quarter.

Kentucky is investing $3.1 million in infrastructure projects aiming to enhance railroad lines and industrial access sites. The project aims to modernize railroads by building a safety monitoring system, scale installation, and more.

Air

Miami International Airport is preparing for a major cargo expansion, and a new Miami Air Cargo Association has been formed. The Association is providing a neutral platform for discussion to strengthen Miami’s air cargo infrastructure.

Technology

The FBI has issued a public advisory explaining how cargo theft occurs and how to protect against it. This announcement is meant to warn carriers about the increasingly sophisticated methods the thieves employ to steal cargo.

Other

Petroleum-based specialty chemicals, like cleaning supplies, are being reformulated to lower costs. The Iran war’s disruption has increased not just oil prices, but transportation costs and lead times as well.
