Airgroup's Freight Market Update: November 13, 2025
This week: U.S. government shutdown officially ends; Canada Post wants to modernize its postal services; U.S.-China port fees are on hold for one year.
Current Critical Industry Trends
The longest U.S. government shutdown in history officially ended Wednesday night. Federal employees and SNAP recipients can expect restored pay and benefits, while lawmakers turn to health care debates in the coming weeks. The compromise keeps most government operations funded through January 30.
Canada Post wants to modernize its postal services. A new plan proposes updates aimed at ensuring financial sustainability. The proposal highlights five guiding principles that Canada Post says will define its approach.
Ocean
Maritime attacks paused in Israel. The Houthis officially announced a halt on their attacks and lifted a blockade on Israeli ports. Shippers are looking to return to the Suez Canal as soon as safely possible.
Ports
The U.S.-China port fees introduced in October are on hold for one year. Shipping groups welcome the relief, while American trade unions raise concerns about the impact on domestic shipbuilding.
Cargo flows at the Port of Long Beach remain steady. Early shipments to avoid tariffs, fast truck and rail logistics, and growing export markets have helped the Port navigate a challenging year.
International
European supply chains remain under pressure. A recent industry survey shows most companies expect volatility for the next 12 to 24 months, with geopolitical tensions and tariffs driving wider sourcing and stronger supplier partnerships.
Trucking
A new CDL rule for non-citizen drivers is on hold. The U.S. Court of Appeals paused enforcement while it reviews a lawsuit claiming the government didn’t follow proper rulemaking steps, affecting thousands of non-domiciled drivers.
Rail
CPKC secured 13 tentative labor agreements with U.S. unions. The five-year contracts cover carmen, hostlers, clerks, and other workers across 10 states, pending member ratification.
CMA CGM boosts its Adriatic rail network, linking Central Europe with faster, more frequent service. The upgrade improves access to Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and neighboring markets, enhancing supply chain efficiency and regional reach.
Air
Air cargo volumes are climbing in Saudi Arabia. With 866,000 tonnes handled this year and new global partnerships driving connectivity, the Kingdom is cementing its position as a logistics hub central to Vision 2030.
Technology
PrePass Safety Alliance is now live in Maine. The Mobile App allows qualified trucks to bypass five weigh stations along I-95, saving time and fuel while helping enforcement focus on higher-risk carriers. This expansion brings PrePass coverage to 46 jurisdictions and over 584 locations across North America.
Other
The eastern U.S. is facing a major cold snap that’s disrupting freight and travel. Snow, freezing temperatures, and hazardous roads are delaying shipments and complicating trucking operations across key transport corridors.
