Airgroup's Freight Market Update: October 30, 2025
This week: Cargo backlogs are mounting in U.S. airfreight; Canadian business leaders are raising alarms over trade uncertainty; Americans are paying more for their caffeine fix.
Current Critical Industry Trends
Cargo backlogs are mounting in U.S. airfreight due to the ongoing government shutdown. The Air Cargo Agents Association says slowed inspections and limited staffing at federal agencies could disrupt shipments. Forwarders recommend reviewing critical cargo and preparing contingency plans.
Canadian business leaders are raising alarms over trade uncertainty. A KPMG survey finds 88% fear losing protections under the Canada‑United States‑Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Companies are reviewing sourcing and supply‑chain plans to prepare for possible tariffs and market shifts.

Ocean
Global container reliability is bouncing back. September 2025 saw on‑time arrivals at 65.2%, the strongest September in six years. This improvement means more predictable ocean‑freight schedules and smoother planning for shipments.

Ports
Panama is planning major container-terminal developments. A feasibility study will precede a concessionaire selection process expected to conclude next year. This move aims to boost transshipment capacity and could impact routing, scheduling, and port operations for global logistics teams.
Commodity vessels are facing long queues at Chinese ports. Waiting times have reached highs not seen since 2022. Logistics teams have been advised to plan for potential delays and consider adjusting schedules to keep shipments on track.

International
Mexico gains a reprieve on tariffs. U.S. negotiations extend past November 1, preventing higher levies. Markets are responding positively, and cross-border shipments remain stable.

Trucking
Truckers are speaking loud and clear: pay matters most. ATRI’s survey shows company drivers rank compensation above the economy, with truck parking, AI in trucking, and training standards emerging as top concerns, while owner-operators focus on brokers and emissions rules.
Truck driver training in Canada may soon gain financial support. PTTAC and STA are working with federal representatives to include these programs under the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program grants and loans. If successful, this could reduce barriers for students pursuing careers in commercial trucking.

Rail
The Minot Intermodal Facility is making a big impact. RMG and BNSF have now loaded 1,000 trains, moving soybeans, ethanol byproducts, and other commodities efficiently to U.S. and international ports. The hub also drives economic growth, creates jobs, and reduces reliance on long-haul trucking.

Air
Hong Kong airfreight is heating up ahead of the peak season. Rates to North America have risen faster than those to Europe, reflecting capacity pressures as importers front-load cargo ahead of potential U.S. tariffs.
U.S. air travel disruption continues to worsen. More than 5,600 flights were delayed Monday as air traffic controller absences surged amid the federal government shutdown. Cargo and passenger operations may face further delays if staffing shortages persist.

Technology
Predictive visibility is now the top tech priority for freight forwarders and 3PLs. A new survey shows 44% of professionals will focus on forecasting in 2026, while 11% plan to prioritize cybersecurity and compliance. Digital adoption is accelerating, but protecting connected operations remains a critical challenge.

Other
Americans are paying more for their caffeine fix. The average price per pound hit $9.14 in September, up 41% from last year, as supply costs and labor increases drive higher prices. Retailers and distributors may face tighter margins and ongoing cost pressures.
