Airgroup's Freight Market Update: Oct 22, 2026
Shifting trade routes, recovering oil flows and new freight connections are shaping this week’s freight market.
Current Critical Industry Trends
Oil exports from the Arabian Gulf have rebounded above pre-conflict levels, according to shipping data cited in recent reports. U.S.-protected shipping lanes south of the Strait of Hormuz have helped sustain flows, although ongoing attacks and elevated shipping risks continue to complicate operations.
Ocean
A.P. Moller-Maersk is studying the feasibility of a nuclear-powered container shipping route between the U.S. and U.K. The proposed “Pink Corridor,” linking Felixstowe and Charleston remains conceptual as the industry explores the practical requirements for nuclear-powered commercial shipping.
Cargo volumes on Russia’s Northern Sea Route are on course for a record season with an estimated transit cargo up 15% year on year.
Ports
Texas LNG is seeking federal approval to extend its deadline to begin exports from its proposed Brownsville LNG terminal by five years, to 2032. The developer cites years of litigation over project approvals, adding uncertainty to the timeline for the planned export facility.
Jordan’s Aqaba port is emerging as an alternative gateway for Iraqi imports amid disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Transit container traffic rose 151.8% in the first nine months of 2026, prompting calls to accelerate port expansion and supporting infrastructure projects.
International
The U.S. and India are working to finalize a trade agreement after months of stalled negotiations, while also seeking to deepen energy cooperation.
Japan’s latest proposal for changes to the Net-Zero Framework (NZF) undermines its IMO partners, particularly climate vulnerable and developing countries.
Trucking
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) named fuel prices a top trucking industry concern for 2026, marking their return to the list for the first time since 2023 as operating costs remain a key challenge for fleets.
Rail
Maersk’s APM Terminals and Vietnam’s Hateco Group signed a non-binding agreement to explore developing rail freight terminals in northern Vietnam, with the potential to improve freight efficiency and ease pressure on road transport.
Air
Air Canada is adding large-pallet capacity to Amsterdam, Mexico and Panama for the winter season, expanding cargo options and addressing gaps in existing air freight networks.
The U.S. lifted restrictions on Mexican airlines, allowing them to add routes from Mexico City airports to U.S. destinations, creating opportunities to expand cross-border air cargo connectivity.
Technology
Missouri’s Columbia Terminal Railroad received a $16.2 million federal grant to modernize its line and deploy two autonomous freight railcars, with the technology aimed at improving efficiency and expanding service to customers.
Other
PD Ports has opened a new marine operations and engineering facility at Cargo Fleet Wharf on the River Tees. The site brings marine operations and vessel maintenance teams together and provides dedicated workshop space, replacing older facilities that had been in use since the 1960s.
